It is with overwhelming sadness that we inform our friends and fans that at 7:00 tonight, Saturday, June 18, our beloved friend and bandmate, Clarence Clemons passed away. The cause was complications from his stroke of last Sunday, June 12th.

Bruce Springsteen said of Clarence: Clarence lived a wonderful life. He carried within him a love of people that made them love him. He created a wondrous and extended family. He loved the saxophone, loved our fans and gave everything he had every night he stepped on stage. His loss is immeasurable and we are honored and thankful to have known him and had the opportunity to stand beside him for nearly forty years. He was my great friend, my partner, and with Clarence at my side, my band and I were able to tell a story far deeper than those simply contained in our music. His life, his memory, and his love will live on in that story and in our band.

Wie dem auch sei: Zu früh gestorben, der Mann. Einer der wenigen Saxophonisten im Pop/Rock-Bereich, den ich ertragen konnte.

ich habe ihn zuletzt 2009 mit bruce gesehen, als ehr 'meet me out in the streets' sang, kamen mir die tränen, heute weiß ich warum - es war das letzte mal

Find ich nicht unbedingt, aber natürlich alle super. Die Outtakes aus den "River"-Sessions auf "Tracks" mag ich auch liebsten. Unglaublich, wie produktiv er da war - "The River" ist ja schon ein Doppel-Album.

Ich find, auf The River ist einiges verzichtbar. Ein paar Songs rausgestrichen und ein Einzelalbum gemacht, es wäre fantastisch geworden. Drive All Night ist zum Beispiel mindestens vier Minuten zu lang, dann zu viele für meinen Geschmack belanglose Liedchen wie Crush On You. Der negative Höhepunkt: I Wanna Marry You, daran hätten auch die Flippers ihre Freude gehabt. Naja, Geschmackssache.

Hm, wenn man mit so was wie "I Wanna Marry You" ein so großes Problem hat, weiß ich ehrlich gesagt nicht, warum man überhaupt Springsteen hört, aber gut.
Kennste denn die aussortierten "River"-Songs wie "Restless Nights", "Roulette", "Dollhouse", "Where the Bands Are" oder "Loose Ends"? Ich schätze mal, wenn die statt ein paar anderer Songs auf dem Album gelandet wären, würdest du es auch als Doppel-Album richtig gut finden.

Nein, die kenne ich nicht. Überhaupt kenn ich nur fünf Alben komplett: Born To Run, Darkness On The Edge Of Town, The River, Nebraska, Born In The USA. Auf keinem der Alben ist noch irgendwo was drauf, was so schlimm ist wie I Wanna Marry You. Der einzige Springsteen-Song bis heute, den ich skippen muss. Aber dafür sind dann auf The River auch so fantastische Sachen wie der Titelsong oder Point Blank.

das sind zwar ohne weiteres klasse alben, aber bruce hat auch danach noch gute aleben / songs gemacht. vielleicht teilweise nichtmehr genauso 100% wie diese alben, aber trotzdem find. ich ueberall was pos. auf den alben. habe selber jahrelang gebraucht um mit The Rising klarzukommen.

Sowohl I Wanna Merry You, als auch songs wie Roulette hat es ja mittlerweile live gegeben, zwar selten aber immerhin. und was der man auf alben gepresst hat, klingt live oft ganz anders. einzigstets neg. highlight fuer mich die The promisse outtackes

btw.

Dann seien sie dir hiermit empfohlen.
Er hat ja früher massig Songs aussortiert, nur weil sie ihm am Ende nicht ins Album-Konzept passten. Und auf der "Tracks"-Box sind wirklich so viele Perlen drauf, die besser sind als viele Songs, die damals auf den Alben gelandet sind. Ich bin ja auch kein Komplettist und feier nicht alles ab ("Nebraska" ist z.B. nicht mein Ding und "Working on a Dream" fand ich auch schwach), aber die Box hab ich mir vorher angehört und war sehr schnell überzeugt, dass ich sie mir zulegen muss. Gleiches gilt für "The Promise", die "Darkness"-Outtakes (wobei auf "Tracks" auch schon paar großartige "Darkness"-Outtakes drauf sind).

Danke, werde ich auf jeden Fall mal antesten. Nebraska ist mein Ding auch nicht, mir ist das zu reduziert. Diese Songs hätte ich gerne mal mit der kompletten Band gehört, das wär interessant geworden, denke ich.

ernsthaft? habe ich gekauft, 1x durschlaufen lassen und dann ab in die ecke, working on a dream (bis auf den titeltrack) find ich dagegen gloreich, genauso wie das hauptwerk MAGIC

Exakt, "Nebraska" ist mir auch zu reduziert, genauso wie "Ghost of Tom Joad".

Als meine drei Lieblingssongs nenne ich ja immer: "Born to Run", "Hungry Heart" und "Fire" - aber alle jeweils in den Live-Versionen von der "1975-85", die sind den Studioversionen haushoch überlegen.

@Indo: Ja, erst vor paar Tagen zum ersten Mal gehört und gleich zum Kauf entschieden. Nur ganz hinten raus war mir das etwas schläfrig, aber ansonsten top. Die "Magic" mag ich auch sehr, und die "Working on a Dream" fühlte sich für mich an wie eine Ansammlung von zu Recht aussortierten "Magic"-Outtakes.

ich mag im uebrigen besonders das von vielen verhasste queen of the supermarket. haettste mal was gesagt, haettste meine haben koennen! so sind die geschmaecker verschieden, ich finde the promisse das album, was man am wenigsten haben muss. die liveshows zum zweiten soloalbum waren mit den versionen damals auch gloreich!

wo wir doch gerade ueber bruuuuuce fachsimpeln. folgendes problem, unser neues auto (4jahre alt) hat nen eingebauten cd player (und der laesst sich auch nicht mal just fuer 100euro umruesten) und dieser spielt leider keine mp3's ab. fuers auto haette ich gerne ein springsteen cd (19/80 min) was wuerdet ihr draufpacken.

bei letzterem wuerde sich der effekt einer zusammenstellung ja eleminieren, aus platzgruenden kann ich aber nicht meine komplette sammlung mit ins auto nehmen. und ja ... beide songs nicht wirklich meines ... the tie that binds geht auch nicht. und zu darkness, ein geiles album, '78 war halt nen geiler jahrgang

I've been sitting here listening to everyone talk about Clarence and staring at that photo of the two of us right there. It's a picture of Scooter and The Big Man, people who we were sometimes. As you can see in this particular photo, Clarence is admiring his muscles and I'm pretending to be nonchalant while leaning upon him. I leaned on Clarence a lot; I made a career out of it in some ways.

Clarence doesn't leave the E Street Band when he dies. He leaves when we die.

So, I'll miss my friend, his sax, the force of nature his sound was, his glory, his foolishness, his accomplishments, his face, his hands, his humor, his skin, his noise, his confusion, his power, his peace. But his love and his story, the story that he gave me, that he whispered in my ear, that he allowed me to tell... and that he gave to you... is gonna carry on. I'm no mystic, but the undertow, the mystery and power of Clarence and my friendship leads me to believe we must have stood together in other, older times, along other rivers, in other cities, in other fields, doing our modest version of god's work... work that's still unfinished. So I won't say goodbye to my brother, I'll simply say, see you in the next life, further on up the road, where we will once again pick up that work, and get it done.

Big Man, thank you for your kindness, your strength, your dedication, your work, your story. Thanks for the miracle... and for letting a little white boy slip through the side door of the Temple of Soul.

I'm gonna leave you today with a quote from the Big Man himself, which he shared on the plane ride home from Buffalo, the last show of the last tour. As we celebrated in the front cabin congratulating one another and telling tales of the many epic shows, rocking nights and good times we'd shared, "C" sat quietly, taking it all in, then he raised his glass, smiled and said to all gathered, "This could be the start of something big."
