5. Pijn – Loss (8 tracks / 66 minutes; Holy Roar Records)
“We wanted to reach people on a personal level, and for them to share in the catharsis that making the record had given us.” Those are the words of guitarist Joe Clayton on Loss. It already indicates the idea the people behind Pijn have of their music and their band. It is a loose collective with lots of people contributing to a record that shares so much with some of post-rock’s greatest Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Pijn asked their fans to send in voicemails, pictures and ideas to help with the writing process. One might guess that this was an album for those dark wintry months when the nights are longer than the days and the sun barely wins its daily fight. However, there is something about this album that gives a beacon of support. Maybe the idea that there are people who feel just like oneself or the variable instrumentation on this double LP; we hear the regular rock band instruments, some strings and keys but also a saw. Whoever listens to Blanch and doesn’t feel touched should check for his heart if its still beating. Pijn’s debut album is definitely one to remember and to synchronize with our hearts, our minds and spirits – not a loss but our gain.

4. Møl – Jord (8 tracks / 41 minutes; Holy Roar Records)
If there is one record this year that has shown a totally new side to a genre I love, then it must be Møl from Aarhus, DK. Black metal by its definition is a form of music that is drawn to the obscure, to the dark, to all things death. To the rust, the grave and the blood. Møl are no exemption to this. But they have a way of presenting their ideas that is pumping blood and endorphines through your veins at a speed unknown before. They are the posi-core version of black metal. When Kim is opening up Bruma with “These throes, our plight / Bound by mortal sight / Still we think ourselves chainless” it’s like an extra dose of oxygen running through your body with the emphasis on the last word. Of course it talks about the negative strains of life, the enduring repetition of biblical plights and our tour de death, but it also shows the hope in it, as we see ourselves not just as mortal shells but as individuals with boundless possibilities. The whole rhythm of the song fills you with energy and you feel able to take on the world screamingly. The guitar duo complies with an uplifting riffing and a warm base. And not just on Bruma but throughout the whole album. This is a black-gaze album for the ages not pulling us down but pushing us up.

3. The Ocean – Phanerozoic I: Paleozoic (7 tracks / 47 minutes; Pelagic Records/Metal Blade)
A love relationship relies on many things, among them attraction and secrecy. We are all drawn towards something that holds a physical or mental spell upon us. We want to find out what is behind the veil. Want to unwrap the secrets layer by layer. To get to its deepest core. Maybe this is a remain of our neanderthal-past of hunting and gathering. This album is just that. The most awaited one. The most seductive outward appearance. The moments of opening the box, the tri-fold, the discs, the smell of it, the look and feel of the fossils.
And that is just the outside shell to the music inside: So many motifs that are already known and cherished. The intro taking up where Precambrian left us ten years ago with a desire for more. The short blastbeats in Cambrian II: Eternal Recurrence that display Paul’s abilities strongly but still not completely. The moment in Devonian: Nascent with Loic seducing us with his clean voice singing “Our dreams now soaring above the surface with horizons shifting slow in blue”.
I start to gather more information about the topics, try to clarify what is hidden beneath all these lines. And I realize that Eternal Recurrence sums it up so nicely: “Your whole life, like a sandglass will always be reversed” I will return. Always.

2. Zeal & Ardor – Stranger Fruit (16 tracks / 47 minutes; Radicalis Music/MVKA Music)
Southern Georgia, 1896. The heat gives way to shadowy paths in a forest to be deforested for a new road. Six dark-colored formerly freed slaves been gathered and connected with iron chains wearing gray-striped uniforms. They are driving their axes into trees and try to talk with each other by humming and singing their gospels. Suddenly one of the guys turns around using the axe to free himself and the five others from their chains, their guards and the hardened reality that they are not free, all the while screaming “Ain’t no lord gonna help you now”. After the three guards have been butchered with the rage of blasting chops and hits the leader, turns around and tells his soulmates “Bring the dead bodies down to a graveyard now”. I am fascinated and forever thankful.

1. Deafheaven – Ordinary Corrupt Human Love (7 tracks / 61 minutes; published by Anti)
This album makes it difficult for me because it is definitely not the most important (see Møl or Daughters) but it is the album that I listened to most this year because it embraces you like no other. There have been lots of discussions about the quality of this record as compared to Sunbather. Should we really do this? Should we always judge an album by its (pre)predecessor? Can we not judge without comparing? To end the discussions from my point of view – this album deserves to be looked on its own. Judge whether you like it or not, and man, I do!
Because: This album has a quality to combine many different influences from prog to pop, yes pop. The accordion-like intro to Honeycomb. The warm guitar dots painted on a melancholic summer background in Canary Yellow. The first moment of Nadia Kury telling “the story” of You Without Him (the most effective feature on this album). The dominantly soft piano intro (and of course outro) to Night People and Chelsea Wolfe’s fragile intonation of “I found myself at your side”. Maybe this also explains why I feel so warmly hugged by this record. Deafheaven open their studio to their circle of friends and we as listeners are more than welcome to bring our emotions along and pour them into passages of world collapse and warm reconstruction.

Tur Ocean "nur" auf #3?
Die Vorfreude war doch etwas größer.

Ocean ist eine megageile Platte, aber ich ging bei den ersten drei Plätzen, die alle qualitativ für mich auf einem Level sind, dann irgendwann davon aus, welche Platte ich in 2018 am häufigsten gehört habe. Und das war definitiv Deafheaven. Wär die Ocean nen Monat oder zwei früher rausgekommen, wäre sie wahrscheinlichst PdJ geworden. Aber wenn man das Ding halt nur 56 Tage vor Jahresanfang rausbringt....

werden jetzt eigentlich noch listen kommen? von cracker, ja? sonst noch wer? ansonsten stell ich bald das endergebnis der zusammengeführten forums-top10 ein. zu lange warten machte ja keinen sinn, wenn das thema eigenlich längst durch ist ...

dann schliesse ich auch mal ab mit 2018..same procedure as every year, no reihenfolge...

segall prischt einmal querbeet durch sein bisheriges schaffen und packt dazu worauf er sonst noch gerade bock hat. abwechslungreich ist hier nur der vorname…

apathy - the widow’s sun
apathy brennt ein feuerwerk an fetten beats, geilen samples und dopen rhymes ab. ausserdem hat das album einen sehr geilen flow. phat.

alien mustangs - alienation
die art psych, wie ihn die band aus thessaloniki spielt, ist jetzt nichts wirklich neues. dennoch klingt alienation sehr frisch und man kann sich wunderbar darin verlieren.

charlottas burnin’ trio - from nothing to eternity
charlotta und ihre beiden jungs schmeissen das alte spaceship an und cruisen auf dem psychedelic highway richtung outer space. eine echte perle.

rf shannon - trickster blues
souliger desert blues mit r&b anleihen wird auf trickster blues geboten. es geht nicht darum möglichst direkt ans ziel zu kommen, besser auf den scenic byway abbiegen, ein wenig in den schatten liegen und die gedanken abschweifen lassen.. sehr mellow und sehr hübsch das ganze.

kosmodrom - gravitationsnarkose
name und cover des albums sind schon schwer zu toppen und auch musikalisch kann gravitationsnarkose einiges. kosmodrom treiben ihren stoner rock dynamisch nach vorne, die drums drücken und die gitarre darf gerne auch mal funky sein. ein wirklich erfrischendes album.

asteroid #4 - collide
mit ghost garden, explore und sagamore landen asteroid #4 zu beginn des albums gleich einen astreinen hattrick und lassen dann auch auch nichts mehr anbrennen. ich muss zugeben, collide hat mich nicht gleich gepackt, es war mir erst ein wenig zu glatt und zu rausgeputzt. aber am ende des tages wickeln sie mich halt doch wieder um den finger mit ihrem paisley schönklang.

firefriend - yellow spider
firefriend spinnen ein netz aus trippigen psych sounds und verhuschten gaze klängen, geschmückt mit tüchtig reverb. öfters luftig verträumt aber ab und an auch mit härterer kante.

the steams - wild ferment
die zweite griechische band meiner diesjährigen top 10.. wie alien mustangs sind auch die steams in psychedelischen gefilden zuhause, lassen aber öfters mal die kalifornische sonne rein, am liebsten die wie sie in den 60 70er jahren vom himmel gestrahlt hat. ein unglaublicher grower von einem album.

greenleaf - hear the rivers
greenleaf geben gleich vollgas und laden zur womöglich geilsten hard (stoner) rock party des vergangenen jahres. im sound ein wenig härter als zuletzt, tiptoppes songwriting und immer catchy wie sau. ich sage jetzt einfach mal das greenleaf noch nie so gut waren wie auf hear the rivers.

Da ist sie . Ich muss mir deine Liste später mal mit genug Zeit für die Beispielsongs vornehmen. Bisher nur Everyone's a winner gehört und der ist natürlich der Hammer. Das ist mal ein geiles Cover. Nachspielen kann jeder, covern ist ganz was anderes. Die Gitarre ist schon unverschämt, aber zusammen mit der Percussion . Wahnsinn.
Und mal schauen, was die Greenleaf bietet. Schon hier, nur noch nicht gehört. Vorfreude gepusht.

Ich bin auch noch aus einem anderen Grund wirklich neidisch, wenn ich deine Liste sehe. Da sind -wie eigentlich sonst auch immer- mehrere neue Bands drin. Ich habe schon seit zwei/drei Jahren grad mal notdürftig Zeit, die wichtigen Bands zu verfolgen, für die guten Neuen bleibt da nichts. Will ich ständig mal ändern, klappt aber irgendwie nicht . Wenn das so weitergeht, werde ich einfach deine Tipps blind kaufen .

ob ich in meinen vergangenen listen auch immer einige neue dinge drin hatte müsste ich jetzt nachschauen. aber in dieser hinsicht war 2018 ein gutes jahr, 6 von 4 bands sind neuentdeckungen. cbp ist ganz zum schluss noch raus- und asteroid #4 reingerutscht, auch für murder by death hat es nicht ganz gereicht. die neue farflung gefällt mir sehr gut und hätte eventuell chancen auf eine platzierung haben können, aber die habe ich erst vor einigen tagen zum ersten mal gehört und weiters aufhalten wollte ich die liste dann auch nicht mehr.

Ach, das war wirklich Hot Chocolate. Bei denen kenn ich mich Nullo aus, aber als sich mir der Verdacht aufdrängte, dass es sich um ein Cover handeln soll, war der Name gleich präsent.
Nu, vermutlich hab ich's dann irgendwo schon mal gelesen .

Schade um CBP . Farflung habe ich auch noch nicht getestet, Asteroid #4 immerhin schon einige Male.
Ich bin jetzt mal durch alle durch, sehr schön übrigens, dass du dir die Arbeit mit den Songbeispielen gemacht hast. Von deinen anderen Lieblingen ist noch Kosmodrom bekannt, Alien Mustangs habe ich auf dem Schirm. Ausser Apathy trifft der ganze Rest meinen Geschmack mit der gewohnten Philschen Selbstverständlichkeit. Wobei Charlottas Burnin' Trio da doch weit raussticht. Ein ganz grandioses Lied, deine Beschreibung trifft's perfekt und dieser lange lange Endpart -oder ist das ein eigenes Outro- ist einfach wundervoll. The Steams und Firefriend erschliessen sich mir nicht so direkt, da vermisse ich noch den Wow-Effekt. RF Shannon dagegen ist genau mein Ding. Die und CB3 werden ohne weiteres Testen eingebeutelt .

Die hatten einen wirklich ganz eigenen unverkennbaren Sound, Errol Brown war ein ganz versierter Songschreiber. Eine Best of von denen sollte durchaus in jeder Sammlung stehen

Modern? Ich finde, das ist fast schon Retrocore. Wer Snapcase liebt, sollte auf jeden Fall auch Turnstile lieben.

Mit modern meinte ich eher, das denen nicht dieser Muckibuden - Flair anhaftet !

Wobei Charlottas Burnin' Trio da doch weit raussticht. Ein ganz grandioses Lied, deine Beschreibung trifft's perfekt und dieser lange lange Endpart -oder ist das ein eigenes Outro- ist einfach wundervoll. hey, cool das dir cb3 so direkt in die ohren gehen anders als im video benutzen sie auf dem album übrigens einen akustischen bass. ich finde das gibt den songs auch noch so einen gewissen touch. und dann auch gleich noch rf shannon eingepackt.. ich liebe die atmosphäre welche die tracks auf trickster blues verströmen..

Stimmt, Turnstile ist nix für mich.
Danke für die anderen Tipps. ASG kenne ich, finde ich gut. YOB kenne ich auch, eine Zeitlang verfolgt, aber dann passte es nicht mehr. Windhand schon mal angetestet, aber nicht so recht richtig. Dann bleiben noch Crypt Trip, die höre ich mir mal an .

Insgesamt war ich bis zum Sommer eher enttäuscht vom Musikjahr 2018 aber inzwischen hat sich das gewandelt, da kamen schon ein paar Perlen.
